Detect and remove duplicate images on your hard drive

dupeGuru Picture Edition (PE for short) can help automatically find duplicate pictures on your computer and save both headaches and valuable hard drive space.

dupeGuru Picture Edition is actually a spin-off from the excellent dupeGuru, a program designed for doing the same thing for music files so from the start, you know you're in fairly good hands when it comes to duplication apps. The other good thing is, it's also open source too so those with programming knowledge can modify it to their needs.

dupeGuru Picture Edition can detect image duplicates in most of the major formats, including PNG, JPG and GIF. It integrates with your Photos folder so you don't need to go browsing around for images to scan. In fact, it can automatically scan your entire library instantly. Of course, you may not want dupeGuru Picture Edition to detect certain images or file types and the preferences give you the chance to tweak it to your liking via the scanning engine settings.

As regards what to do with your duplicates, dupeGuru Picture Edition can either delete images instantly or move them to another folder. The program features a 'Power Marker' for adding extra annotations to duplicate files. The program isn't perfect, however. One of the problems is that it doesn't always detect duplicates, especially those that are not in any of the major formats. In addition, scanning still takes a long time especially if you've got a big library of pictures.

Most recently, dupeGuru Picture edition has gone through a major revamp of the interface making it much slicker. However, the developer should have concentrated on improving the speed of scanning as many users will find it annoyingly slow.

Overall however, dupeGuru PE is an easy to use and highly customizable tool that will eventually help clear your hard drive of unwanted duplicate images.

Changes

Brought back the filter hardness label which disappeared in 2.2.0. Added support for Olympus RAW files (.orf). Fixed a bug causing the picture analysis to stall on some corrupt EXIF data. Make the "Match scaled pictures" option apply to the new EXIF timestamp scan. Fixed glitch in the sorting feature of the Folder column.

  • Pros

    • Gives you control over scan preferences
    • Integration with your Photos folder
    • Simple to use
    • Special support for PSD and RAW files
  • Cons

    • Doesn't always correctly detect duplicates
    • Scanning can be slow

Clean

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world's leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.
